About & sources

How each league’s standings are computed, where the data comes from, and every disagreement with the sources. This is an unofficial, fan-built scoreboard for the 49 girls varsity field hockey teams in SCVAL, BVAL, PCAL, MCAL and EAL. Every number on it is either read from a public source and shown as-is, or computed from public game results by rules published below. Nothing is guessed, and every disagreement we find with a source is published rather than quietly resolved.

Data sources

Covers the CIF Central Coast Section (SCVAL, BVAL, PCAL), the North Coast Section’s MCAL and the Northern Section’s EAL. Teams outside these five leagues appear only as opponents. This snapshot covers all 49 teams and 396 games (294 of them league games): 228 final, 6 not yet reported.

MaxPrepsPrimary source
Team schedules, scores, league standings tables and school colors come from MaxPreps’ own public data feed, the same one that powers its team and league pages. We read it, never write to it, and never hotlink its mascot images — each school is shown as a color monogram instead, built from the two colors the feed reports. Each team page’s roster and season player stats come from MaxPreps too, for all 49 teams in all five leagues: whatever the coach entered, with anything nobody published left blank. Other public sources, such as a school’s own athletics site, only fill a blank MaxPreps leaves: the team page marks every roster value that came from one, and its Sources row links each page behind those values and behind the coaches it names.MaxPreps field hockey (opens in a new tab)

When MaxPreps has never published a result for a game that a league’s official schedule says was scheduled — today that is 8 games — it is listed as scheduled per the league rather than silently dropped.

Last season (2025-26): the 2025-26 archive has final standings and all-league awards for SCVAL and BVAL, each from that league’s own documents (SCVAL’s two PDFs; BVAL’s standings sheet and all-league documents), because MaxPreps only ever serves the current season. PCAL, MCAL and EAL are marked unavailable: we found no official 2025-26 final standings, and we do not fill the gap with standings or awards from third-party sites or newspapers. The archive links what MCAL did publish officially (2025 All-MCAL Field Hockey Team), without reproducing it.

Club field hockey: the club teams pages list 13 youth clubs (those around these schools, plus any other club a player here is tied to) and, for each, the players on these varsity rosters that a public page ties to it: the club’s own site, a SportsRecruits, NCSA or Hudl profile, a MaxPreps career page, the NFHCA’s high school watchlists, MAX Field Hockey’s club and school pages, or local news such as the Gilroy Dispatch and Stick Together. It was researched by hand, each tie checked twice when it was added, and is not part of the twice-daily update. Only players already on these rosters are named, social media is never used, and recall is partial.

College commitments: the college commitments page lists the players on these varsity rosters that a public page says have committed to play a sport in college, field hockey or any other (16 found), from players’ recruiting profiles, commitment lists, club and school sites, and local news. It was researched by hand with the club pages’ matching rule, each commitment checked twice when it was added, and is not part of the twice-daily update. Social media is never used, so a commitment announced only there is not listed, and recall is partial.

Standings, points & tiebreaks

Each league’s standings are computed from individual game results by that league’s own rules, then compared field by field against MaxPreps’ own published table (see the cross-check log). A team with no reported results is never shown as a fabricated 0-0-0 record. All five leagues award 3 points for a win and 1 for a tie; SCVAL, BVAL, PCAL and MCAL order their tables by points, and EAL uses them only to decide its title and publishes no standings, so this site orders that table by the same points; they differ in which games count and how ties are broken.

SCVAL — Santa Clara Valley Athletic League

League membership is a list we maintain from the official SCVAL alignment, not whatever happens to appear in the MaxPreps feed that day. De Anza has 7 teams this season: the official grid still lists Wilcox, but Wilcox is not fielding a team, so it is not shown anywhere on the site and its grid fixtures are not counted. The rules are quoted below, verbatim, from the SCVAL Field Hockey By-Laws 2026-27.

Points & standings order

“A team shall be awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie. The division placement/standings will be the order of team points. The team with the greatest number of points will be declared the champion and higher in the standings. If there is a tie at the top both teams shall be declared division champions.” — Article VI, Section 2

We implement that literally: points = 3 × wins + 1 × ties from league games only (Article VI, Section 1 — a double round robin, division games only counting to the division record), and the PTS column on every standings table is the actual ordering key, not a secondary stat.

If teams are tied on points

The by-laws set out one tiebreak chain, applied by “working to bring one team out” of the tied group and then restarting the whole chain for whoever is left:

  1. Better head-to-head record among the tied teams (Article VI §3 (better head-to-head record among the tied teams)).
  2. Greater number of wins in division play (Article VI §4 (greater number of wins in division play)).
  3. Least goals given up between the head-to-head tied teams (Article VI §5 (least goals given up between the tied teams)).
  4. Goal differential between the head-to-head tied teams (Article VI §6 (goal differential between the tied teams)).
  5. A coin flip. This site cannot compute a coin flip, so teams that reach this step render as tied at the same place (a shared “T6” instead of a 6th and a 7th), with a footnote citing this rule. (Article VI §7 (coin flip — we cannot compute it, so the teams stay tied))

Our display order is not a league ruling — if SCVAL settles a coin flip we have no way to know, the official standings remain the source of truth.

Overtime

“Varsity: four 15-minute quarters. After a regulation tie (league AND non-league varsity games): ONE 7-minute sudden-victory period, 7-a-side. If still tied after that one period, the game ends in a tie (no shootout in league play).” — Article IV

An overtime win counts as a full win, shown with an OT tag. Because league play never has a shootout, the shootout state our code supports never actually occurs in SCVAL league play — it exists so the rendering code has somewhere correct to send a shootout if one is ever reported.

CCS qualification

“16-team CCS tournament: SCVAL 7, BVAL 4, PCAL 2, at-large 3.” — Article VII, Section 1
“The first three teams in each division are awarded automatic qualifiers (AQ) to CCS playoffs (ties broken by Article VI, Sections 2-7). Fourth place teams play a play-in game; the winner receives the SCVAL 7th AQ. The losing 4th-place team and both 5th-place teams are submitted to CCS for at-large consideration. #1 v #1, #2 v #2, #3 v #3 crossover games are played after the season to help CCS ordering (home site by coin flip). Per the official schedule PDFs these crossover/play-in games are Friday, October 30, 2026.” — Article VII, Section 2

Article VII §2 (first three in each division are automatic qualifiers; fourth place plays in for the SCVAL 7th AQ; the play-in loser and both fifth-place teams go to CCS for at-large consideration). Live, team-by-team status is on the CCS playoffs page.

BVAL — Blossom Valley Athletic League

Points & standings order

  • BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §6a (3 points for a win, 1 for a tie).
  • BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §6a (division placement is the order of team points).
  • BVAL 2026-27 schedules (home-and-home double round robin; division games only).
  • BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §1a (one 7-minute 7v7 sudden-victory period; still tied ⇒ the game ends in a tie).
  • BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §6a (“If there is a tie, both teams shall be declared Division Champions”).

A game counts when it is on BVAL’s official schedule and both teams belong to the same division; tournament and postseason games never count.

If teams are tied on points

  1. BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §6b (head-to-head; with three or more tied, a 3-1-0 mini-league among them).
  2. BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §6c (more division wins).
  3. BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §6d (head-to-head goal differential among the tied teams).
  4. BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §6e (fewest goals allowed in division play).
  5. BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §6f (coin flip — we cannot compute it, so the teams stay tied).

When three or more teams are level, the chain places one team at a time — the first step that separates anyone decides the best of the group — and then restarts from the top for the rest.

A step this site cannot compute (a coin flip, a draw, a play-in) leaves the teams level at the same place, with a footnote citing the rule. Our display order is not a league ruling.

Postseason

BVAL Field Hockey By-Laws (rev. 8/13/24) §7a (Mt. Hamilton 1st-3rd are BVAL #1-#3; Mt. Hamilton 4th plays at the Santa Teresa champion for BVAL #4).

  • Mt. Hamilton: Places 1-3 — automatic CCS qualifier (BVAL #1-#3).
  • Mt. Hamilton: 4th place — plays at the Santa Teresa champion Sat Oct 31, 11 AM, for BVAL’s 4th berth.
  • Mt. Hamilton: 5th or lower — no automatic-berth route (at-large is the CCS committee’s call).
  • Santa Teresa: Champion — hosts Mt. Hamilton #4 Sat Oct 31, 11 AM, for BVAL’s 4th berth.
  • Santa Teresa: 2nd or lower — no automatic-berth route (at-large is the CCS committee’s call).

PCAL — Pacific Coast Athletic League

Points & standings order

  • PCAL Sports Rules — Field Hockey (Jan 2022) §1.7 (3 points for a win, 1 for a tie).
  • PCAL Sports Rules — Field Hockey (Jan 2022) §1.7 (standings are the order of points).
  • PCAL Sports Rules — Field Hockey (Jan 2022) §1.4 (one division; the 2026 schedule is a double round robin).
  • PCAL Sports Rules — Field Hockey (Jan 2022) §1.6.4 (overtime applies to single round robin or bracket play; a tie is 1 point either way).
  • PCAL By-laws (rev. May 2025) §22.3 (two teams level at the top are co-champions; three are tri-champions).

A game counts when it is on PCAL’s official schedule and both teams belong to the same league; tournament and postseason games never count.

If teams are tied on points

A tie whose group starts at 1st:

  1. PCAL By-laws (rev. May 2025) §23.3 (head-to-head in league contests; three level: three-way, then two-way).
  2. PCAL By-laws (rev. May 2025) §23.3.1(b) / §23.3.3(c) (record against each lower-placed team, in standings order).
  3. PCAL By-laws (rev. May 2025) §23.3 (the CCS-points step applies only to sports seeded by CCS points; then a coin flip or blind draw — we cannot compute either, so the teams stay tied).

A tie whose group starts at 2nd:

  1. PCAL By-laws (rev. May 2025) §23.3 (head-to-head in league contests; three level: three-way, then two-way).
  2. PCAL By-laws (rev. May 2025) §23.3.3 (record against each higher-placed team, from the champion down).
  3. PCAL By-laws (rev. May 2025) §23.3.1(b) / §23.3.3(c) (record against each lower-placed team, in standings order).
  4. PCAL By-laws (rev. May 2025) §23.3 (the CCS-points step applies only to sports seeded by CCS points; then a coin flip or blind draw — we cannot compute either, so the teams stay tied).

Any other tie: PCAL’s by-laws break ties only for the two CCS places; this tie is left as it is.

When three or more teams are level, each step is applied to the whole group at once; teams it separates are placed, and the chain restarts from the top for any teams still level.

A step this site cannot compute (a coin flip, a draw, a play-in) leaves the teams level at the same place, with a footnote citing the rule. Our display order is not a league ruling.

Postseason

PCAL Sports Rules — Field Hockey (Jan 2022) §1.8.1 (the top two of the final round-robin standings are automatic CCS qualifiers).

  • Places 1-2 — automatic CCS qualifier.
  • 3rd or lower — no automatic-berth route; may apply for at-large (PCAL By-laws §23.4).

  • MCAL Field Hockey Handbook (rev. 10/19/24) §8a (double round robin, 16 league games each).
  • MCAL General Rules (no regular-season overtime; ties stand).
  • MCAL Field Hockey Handbook (rev. 10/19/24) §7a (equal points: co-MCAL Champions).

A game counts when it is on MCAL’s official schedule and both teams belong to the same league; tournament and postseason games never count. Games between two MCAL teams on or after Fri Oct 23 are tournament games.

If teams are tied on points

  1. MCAL Tie-Breaking Criteria (rev. 3/26) step 1 (head-to-head winning percentage).
  2. MCAL Tie-Breaking Criteria (rev. 3/26) step 2 (record against the teams above the tie).
  3. MCAL Tie-Breaking Criteria (rev. 3/26) step 3 (spring draw numbers, lowest wins: AW 1, R 2, T 3, B 4, LW 5, U 6, MC 7, CSH 8, MA 9).

If the season ends with games unplayed: MCAL General Rules (with an incomplete schedule, winning percentage replaces points).

Postseason

  • MCAL 2026 Field Hockey Play-off sheet (six schools; seeds 1 and 2 have byes).
  • MCAL Field Hockey Handbook (rev. 10/19/24) §7a and §8b (seeded by point total).
  • MCAL 2026 Play-off sheet (lowest-ranked remaining seed at #1, highest-ranked remaining of 3-6 at #2; confirmed by the 2025 bracket).
  • MCAL Tie-Breaking Criteria (rev. 3/26) (6th place: a play-in unless one team won the head-to-head 2-0; the higher draw number hosts. A three-way tie for 5th: draw numbers place the 5th seed and the other two play in, hosted by the winner of their earlier meeting).

MCAL Field Hockey Handbook (rev. 10/19/24) §8b says the top four qualify; the 2026 play-off sheet (and the 2025 tournament) use six. This site follows the 2026 sheet.

The regular-season points leader is MCAL Champion. If a different team wins the tournament, it also receives a pennant.

EAL — Eastern Athletic League

Points & standings order

  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §VII.C.2 (to decide the league championship: 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss).
  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §VII.C.2 (points decide the league championship; the Guidelines give no rule for ordering the league table — the §III.E.1 Super Regional seeding criteria are not applied here — so this site orders the whole table by the same points).
  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §III.A.1 (double round robin; in 2026 six teams play ten league games each).
  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §VII.E.4 (varsity: a 10-minute sudden-victory period, then 1 v 1s until there is a winner, so a league game never ends level).
  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §VII.C (“In the case of a tie, duplicate awards will be given”).

A game counts when MaxPreps marks it a league game and both teams belong to the same league; MaxPreps’ tournament and postseason games never count. Games between two EAL teams on or after Fri Oct 30 are Super Regional games.

If teams are tied on points

  1. The Northern Section’s Field Hockey Guidelines break no tie in the league table: a tie for first means co-champions (§VII.C), and the Super Regional seeding criteria (§III.E.1) are the coaches’ to apply, so this tie is left as it is.

A step this site cannot compute (a coin flip, a draw, a play-in) leaves the teams level at the same place, with a footnote citing the rule. Our display order is not a league ruling.

Postseason

  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §III.E.1 and §IV (the top six EAL/SRL schools compete; varsity only).
  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §IV (“The format will be determined at the preseason tournament meeting”; none is published).
  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §III.E.1 (“Seeding will be based on League record, Head-to-Head Goal differential (Capped at six (6) per game, Goal against, Coin flip.”) — quoted as written; this site does not apply it.
  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §VII.J (a school without all its scores reported by noon the day after the last contest of the season is not eligible for the playoffs).
  • CIF Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines 2026-28 §V and §VI (NorCal and State qualification: “Not Applicable”).

The Northern Section’s field hockey postseason is the Super Regional, Oct 30–31: the top six schools qualify. The coaches set its format and seeding, its site is to be announced, and no bracket is published yet. There is no NorCal or State path.

  • MaxPreps table (opens in a new tab) read this run (7 rows).

MaxPreps orders the EAL table by winning percentage; the EAL decides its title on points (Northern Section Field Hockey Guidelines §VII.C.2) and publishes no standings, so MaxPreps’ places can differ from ours. MaxPreps also lists Red Bluff, which is not fielding a varsity team in 2026.

No official schedule document. The EAL publishes no schedule or standings document of its own. Its league games are the games MaxPreps marks as league games; on 2026-10-04 all 30 of them matched, by date and home side, the 2026 league grid posted on the EAL/SRL umpires’ site (fieldhockeyumpires.org).

How a score is shown

One rule governs every score on this site: a game that has not been decided never shows as 0–0. A real final score of 0 prints as 0 in full-strength ink; a game with nothing reported yet prints an em dash in muted ink, with a screen-reader label saying so. The two are never visually or semantically confused.

  • A completed game shows FINAL and the score; an overtime win adds an OT tag.
  • A level EAL league game that MaxPreps marks as won was decided on 1 v 1s: it shows the level score with an SO tag and counts as the winner’s win. The 1 v 1 tally is not shown.
  • A forfeit counts in win-loss-tie but not in goals for/against/differential — marked with a dagger everywhere a total would otherwise be misleading.
  • A game with no score posted yet shows SCORE NOT REPORTED with an empty outline chip, never a blank or a zero.
  • A game MaxPreps marks as in progress shows LIVE, but this is a scheduled-window label, not a running score — see how often this updates.
  • A postponed game shows POSTPONED with the new date when one is known, or “TBD” when it is not.
  • A non-league game carries a small NL tag everywhere; it counts in a team’s overall record and nowhere in the league standings.
  • A score published from si.com carries a marker and a “score via si.com” line on its game page.

Cross-check log

MaxPreps’ own standings feed already carries its computed record, points, goals and placement for every team, so checking our work is a direct comparison, not a reimplementation: for every team we compare our computed W-L-T, goals and place against MaxPreps’ published numbers, field by field. Every disagreement is published here and flagged with ⚑ on the standings row — we always show our own computation and say so, rather than silently picking a side. Where a league’s MaxPreps table differs for a known reason, those rows are listed separately under the reason.

si.com has a score for 4 games that MaxPreps has not, and that our backfill rules did not publish. Each stays unreported here, with the reason:

si.com backfills

3 scores

MaxPreps is our primary source. We publish a score from High School on SI (si.com) only when one of these holds, and only when si.com has the game as final with both teams matched by si.com’s own team ids (never by name), on the official date or a day either side of it:

  • MaxPreps has no contest at all for a game on the league’s official schedule;
  • MaxPreps lists the game, its date has passed, and it has no score;
  • MaxPreps’ row is clearly wrong in a way we can check mechanically: its own win/loss flags contradict its score, the official schedule shows the game was not played on MaxPreps’ date, or it shows a scoreless tie that si.com reports as decided in a league that plays no overtime.

A level si.com score between two EAL teams is never used: a varsity game there is decided on 1 v 1s, and si.com does not say who won them. Any other disagreement keeps MaxPreps’ score and is listed in the cross-check log. A backfilled score counts in the standings like any other final. si.com never decides league membership, league records or the standings order.

How often this updates

This whole site is static: nothing here queries a live API when you load a page. Instead, an automated job re-fetches MaxPreps (and, on most runs, si.com, the league documents and the CCS calendar) and rebuilds the site from scratch, roughly twice a day during the season — once overnight and once in the early morning, Pacific time — between August and November. A game that finishes at 7 PM Thursday typically appears on the site Friday morning, not that same night.

Live scores are not collected. A game MaxPreps marks as in progress is shown as a scheduled window with a LIVE label, never a running score, because this site has no mechanism that watches a game while it is being played.

The snapshot this page was built from was fetched Sun Oct 4, 6:04 AM PT. If a page anywhere on the site shows a “last updated” stamp more than 36 hours old, that is this site telling you its own update may be failing — not a claim that nothing happened in the leagues since then. Per-league detail is under data health.

Postseason

The CCS field is 16 teams: SCVAL 7, BVAL 4, PCAL 2 and 3 at-large (CCS Field Hockey Bylaws 2026-27 §4a (BVAL 4, PCAL 2, SCVAL 7, 3 at-large); CCS Field Hockey Committee report 2025-11-20 §IV (PCAL reduced from 3 automatic berths to 2)). Each league’s own route to its automatic berths is under its rules above; the live, team-by-team picture is on the CCS playoffs page.

North Coast Section: The North Coast Section and CIF hold no field hockey championship. MCAL’s own six-team tournament is the postseason. MCAL tournament

Northern Section: The Northern Section’s field hockey postseason is the Super Regional, Oct 30–31: the top six schools qualify. The coaches set its format and seeding, its site is to be announced, and no bracket is published yet. There is no NorCal or State path. Privacy & accessibility

This site stores exactly three things, all only in your browser: a theme choice, a pinned team and the league you chose to see on the home page. All three live in localStorage and none is ever sent anywhere — there are no accounts, no analytics, no tracking cookies and no third-party requests of any kind on any page. School colors come from data already in the snapshot, never a hotlinked image, and fonts are bundled with the site rather than loaded from a font host at view time.

Accessibility is a floor, not an aspiration: every win/loss/tie is a letter and a written word, never color alone; every score and result has a full sentence for screen readers; contrast is measured against WCAG AA on every ink/surface pair the site actually uses, and a token edit that breaks that floor fails this repository’s own tests before it can ship.

Corrections & contact

This is an independent hobby project with no staffed inbox, so the fastest way to check anything you think looks wrong is to compare it against the primary source directly — every team, standings table and game on this site links back to its MaxPreps page, and the league documents above link straight to each league’s own files, or, for the EAL, to the Northern Section’s Field Hockey Guidelines. If a number here disagrees with one of those sources, that is exactly what the cross-check log is for, and it is worth checking there first: a real disagreement between sources is published, not hidden.

Not affiliated

This is an unofficial fan site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL), the Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL), the Pacific Coast Athletic League (PCAL), the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) and the Eastern Athletic League (EAL), the CIF Central Coast Section (CCS), North Coast Section (NCS) and Northern Section (NS), MaxPreps or Sports Illustrated. All team names, colors and marks belong to their respective schools. Records here are computed from published game results and, while we cross-check them and publish every disagreement we find, they may differ from an official ruling — each league’s own standings (or, for the EAL, which publishes none, the scores its schools report for seeding under the Northern Section’s Field Hockey Guidelines) are always the source of truth for anything that matters competitively, such as playoff seeding.
